As a single male software engineer the odds of me ending up with a girlfriend are quite low. This site states it in nearly the same thought process I used to reach this conclusion. The only difference is that I'm not so much concerned with beauty as with physical fitness. I expect the probabilities for beauty and what I'm looking for are somewhat similar though.
It is kind of like the lottery. You buy a ticket and your odds are something like 1 in 10,000,000 (depending on the lottery.) Calculate that out and you'll see that you end up with .0000001 chance of winning. That's zero out to six digits. That's pretty close to zero in my book.
Now your odds of finding a girlfriend are a bit more difficult. I'll go with the simple system of taking the number of acceptable women as compared to the number of total women. It works out to 18726 potential mates out of a pool of 2,941,118,000. That more or less works out to .00000605. So the odds of any particular woman you meet being girlfriend material are about 60 times greater than winning the lottery. That sounds pretty good doesn't it? Well, not really when you notice that those odds are still zero out to five significant digits.
The problem with this lays in the fact that you will only meet a very, very minor subset of the women on the planet. How many women do you interact with in your life? Let's take a wild ass guess and say 100,000. That's a lot of people and probably would include instances like the grocery store clerk who gives you your change. Statistically in that 100,000 people .605 of them will be an acceptable girlfriend. That means your odds of meeting a girl who might be interested in you and meets your standards are 3 in 5 out of the course of your life. Wow. I hope I manage to recognize that 1 girl when I see her, if I in fact do. I'm doubting it since the majority of a person's interaction with others consists of superficial encounters of the passing by people on the street variety. Remember, this is over the course of your entire life too. That's pretty depressing, isn't it?
These odds only apply to intellectuals however. If you are of average intelligence your standard intelligence deviation will probably be greater because there will be far more people approximately as intelligent as you. If you are insanely sauve and good-looking then the odds are also changed. However, if you are a genius then the odds get much worse since your pool of availability is much smaller due to the very small portion of very intelligent people on the planet. Also, if you are toad-like in appearance or demeanor then the odds of a potential candidate seeing you as a possibility are also much lower.
