In the last year or two I've noticed a plague that has overrun sports news websites. From ESPN to Sporting News to Sports Illustrated there is an obsession with fantasy sports. At first it was a gradual thing with little ads on the sides or a banner ad up top. Now however, half of the links seem to be related to one or another fantasy sport.

Is there anything quite so pointless as a fantasy sport? If you want to play manager or personnel director of a ballclub then pick up a videogame. Most any current EA or Sega sports game has a management mode. At least then you are kind of actually doing something rather than just manipulating numbers like a NYSE watcher. The whole fantasy sports genre reminds me of nothing so much as Magic the Gathering dorks yammering on about their cards and trading or selling them.

This fantasy crap gets in the way of me being able to read the sports news. I'd far rather see news about Vin Baker's latest failed attempt to not be drunken loser than read about how his stat production and huge salary makes him a bad fantasy basketball pick. Keep the fantasy sports hobby to yourself. Nobody else wants to here about it or have it cluttering up the real sports news. At least I sure as hell don't. If I want to read about fake baseball teams and imaginary BS relating to them I'll just read Calvin and Hobbes because their fictitious baseball games are humorous at least.
