Fanfics, short for fan fictions, irritate the hell out of me. There's nothing more tiresome than a really half-assed story written by someone who has nothing to do with the actual series. It is almost a guarantee that the characters will behave in a manner that doesn't match their personality. Even if the characters do behave like they should it is nearly a certainty that the story is going to suck.

I just can't figure out why the heck anyone would ever want to bother writing a fanfic (let alone read one.) Just read what the author has written because anything else isn't part of what the author intended. I suppose I can understand the naughty stories because, well, they are naughty. At least there you are getting something that the author may have wanted to do but couldn't because of their publisher.

Fanfics definitely are in a different category than homage artwork in my opinion. Homage artwork usually isn't attempting to create some new storyline that never happened. Doujinshi isn't artwork by the way, it counts as a fanfic because the point is to tell a story. Sadly enough even I was once guilty of this when I did a three page sample back when I was trying to become a professional comic artist. It was kind of a prerequisite to applying for the job so I guess that sort of scenario might be acceptable.

The whole reason I feel the need to bitch about this is because of all the crap fanfics that show up whenever you want to look something up on google. Try typing 'nekoken' in google. Look at how many of the results are really poorly written fanfics of Ranma 1/2. Bleah. If you are going to write crap, you should at least make it original crap based on your own characters.
