First off I have to say that I don't even particularly like XML. It's way too verbose and contains lots of irritating, pointless cruft like xpath and xslt. It shouldn't be a whole bunch of really crappy programming languages. It is supposed to be a way to represent data. Use a real programming language to manipulate said data.
Ok, enough of that. Anyway, as I've mentioned before Verant has revamped the interface system in Everquest. The new system is XML-based and very customizable up to and including adding windows, changing graphics, and modifying existing windows. Well, there's nothing I like better than being able to change a user interface to suit my preferences. Actually that's a load of crock. There's tons of things I like better but we'll ignore those things for now. I'll continue thinking about them but I won't write them down for you voyeuristic losers who have nothing better to do than read my ramblings. I've wasted a decent amount of time over the last few weeks making a version of the interface that looks and behaves how I want it to.
I didn't change everything. Most of the stuff is perfectly acceptable to me and what improvements I would make would be minimal at best. I also didn't change any of the art. Yes, I'm an artist but I don't particularly have the time or inclination to work on any computer art at this time. Primarily my changes consist of streamlining, shrinking, and different representations of the data. Most of the windows I totally did myself but I stole most of the group windows code from somebody's link on the Ranger's Glade. Sorry, I don't remember which it was but there's a ton of group windows out there that look more or less identical. Without further ado, here you go:
To use the skin download the above zip file. Then unzip said file in your Everquest/uiskins directory. This will create a directory called nekoken_plain. Fire up Everquest. Once you are in the game type
/loadskin
This will give you a list of available skins you can use. If nekoken_plain is listed then type
/loadskin nekoken_plain 1
This will load the nekoken_plain skin while keeping your current window placements and settings intact. Enjoy. If you run into problems post 'em on The Ranger's Glade or on The Safehouse with a subject containing nekoken. I might see it or I might not. I won't bother responding to emails even if you manage to track mine down.
